Curiosity Cabinet - 2025 - Sculpture, Wood, Clay,Cardboard and Embroidery
This cabinet is an extension of my being. Stood in front of it you are invited to handle my body extenders entering a realm shrouded in ritual and symbolism.
The cabinet of curiosities connects the audience on a physical level that encourages an instinctual touch response. The cabinet is a familiar form that exists to display artefacts. My uncanny curiosities are unfamiliar and yet summon connections to the body, creatures and relics.
This is an interactive sculpture that invites you to handle the curiosities, feel them In your hands, let your fingers follow the traces of the hands that formed them.
The Cloot that adorn the frame imbue the structure with ritualistic power. Clootie Wells are often found in Celtic regions, rooted in pagan beliefs, where people would perform a healing ritual by dipping the cloth in water and adorning it and tying it to a nearby tree. I have embroidered my Cloot in cyphered words. (You can find the cypher in the door of the cabinet.) They act as enchantments, my embroidered voice, on the skin like Cloot. My spirit has been embodied in this structure, building it has been a ritualistic act, immortalised in the imagery that hangs from the cabinets body.
